11 tips to make your dog’s day a happy one

Our furry pals are always by our sides to offer us a pick me up. Whether it’s a cuddle, a big ear to listen to our problems or a sloppy kiss on the cheek, they would do anything to see us smile. So how can we make sure they have a cracker of a day too?! Making sure your dog has an enjoyable day doesn't have to be an overwhelming or time-consuming task. Our four-legged friends are fairly easy to please. Take a look at the list below and tell your dog we said 'You're welcome!'.

1) Set up a Sniff-ari? Get it? A sniff safari?

Hide some yummy dog treats around your house or backyard for your dog to find. Dogs are masters of smell and enjoy exercising their noses. Most will pick it up quickly, but you can place some treats in full view so they understand what they are looking for.

2) Play hide and seek

We think it’s safe to say that you are pretty much your dog’s favourite thing in this world. So if you hide somewhere in the house they’ll be so happy to find you. A quick game will definitely brighten their day.

3) Rotate the toy stash

You don’t have to be constantly buying new toys for your floof. Take half of your dogs’ toys, store them for a while and when you bring them back out it will be such a happy reunion. Free toys! (Basically...)

4) Keep the windows open

Unfortunately, we can't always be home with our dogs or have 100% of our focus on them. Keeping a window open for your pup is like leaving the TV on for them. They will get some new and different smells wafting in throughout the day, which will keep them stimulated and entertained while you are out or working.

5) Go right instead of left

Mix it up on your daily walk! Instead of heading out the front door and taking your usual route to the left, go right and even let your dog lead the way. Giving your dog the chance to choose the direction on a walk will build confidence and make sure they don't feel stuck in a rut.

6) Open the at-home spa

We always like to give our dogs a quick scratch behind the ear, but how about upping the ante? Giving your dog a massage has many benefits. They'll feel a lot calmer and less anxious, plus it can help to improve circulation and lymphatic fluid movement. Another bonus is that this quality time with your

pooch can strengthen the bond between you. It's a win-win!

7) A quick training session

Your dog just wants to please you and hear those magic words — "Good dog!". A quick training session gives them enjoyment and allows you to make sure they are still listening and following commands. You can start with the stock-standard sit and stay or mix it up with some fun new tricks too. How about a drop and roll?

8) Enrichment toys and games

You don't always have to have the latest and most fancy enrichment toys. Using what you have around the house will do just fine. We recommend folding some treats into a towel for your dog to unravel. You could also use an egg carton or toilet roll to hide some tasty dog treats. There are so many ways to engage your dog with everyday items.

9) Toy swap

Does your fluffy friend have their own fluffy friend? Organising a toy swap is a lot of fun! New toys are always exciting, but new toys with a friend’s interesting smells on them? Even better.

10) Cuddles!

A simple 5-minute cuddle on the couch could be just what your dog needs to relax. Sometimes we forget that this little bit of attention can go a long way! So, while you're taking a break from work or boiling the kettle for that cuppa, give your furry loved one some cuddles.

11) Take your dog out for a treat

It's becoming more and more popular for your pupper to join you for a cafe trip. And rightly so! They deserve a snack and a puppacino, too. A lot of cafes are now stocking dog treats for your furry friend, check out which cafes in Melbourne have our delicious Dog Street treats.
